
Keeping Things Safe: IR Heaters in Chemical Wash Zones
If you’ve spent any time in a semiconductor clean room, you know the vibe. Everything is pristine, but the chemicals used for cleaning are often volatile and, frankly, scary. When you put infrared (IR) heating lamps on a trolley in these areas, you’re basically introducing a heat source to a room full of flammable vapors. One electrical arc or a component getting too hot, and you’ve got a massive problem on your hands. The “Seal it Tight” Approach We don’t just throw a lamp in a box and call it a day. That’s how accidents happen. Instead, we wrap everything in a sealed, explosion-proof shell. We use high-grade quartz envelopes with a special coating that doesn’t flinch when it hits harsh chemicals. The goal here is simple: keep the vapors out. Even if a lamp burns out, the seal stays intact, so those internal filaments never touch the air around them. Plus, we use specific gaskets and flame-arresting seals where the wires go in. It keeps the “hot zone” and the “vapor zone” completely separate. Staying Stable (and Clean) In a clean room, “stability” is just another word for “don’t mess up the environment.” We make sure our heaters don’t off-gas anything that could contaminate your work. To fight off corrosion from those caustic fumes, we stick with gold-plated or high-nickel connectors. They just hold up better. Then there’s the heat footprint. High-wattage IR lamps get hot. Really hot. If your trolley frame isn’t built for that kind of thermal load, you’re looking at warped metal or—worst case—tripping the fire alarms and shutting down the whole floor. We spend a lot of time balancing the wattage so your substrate hits the right temperature without turning the trolley into an oven. The Trade-off Here’s the honest part: this level of safety comes with a small price. Because of the protective glass and the encapsulation, you lose a tiny bit of radiant efficiency. Some of that IR spectrum gets absorbed before it hits the target. You might need to bump up the power a nudge or move the lamp a bit closer to keep your ramp-up times where they need to be. But once you’ve got the PID controller dialed in, the system just works. You get the heat you need without the constant worry of a flash fire in the wash bay.
