Let’s be honest: those old-school bathroom heat lamps are kind of a joke. They usually rely on basic bulbs that just can’t handle a steamy shower. One humid morning and—pop—the bulb is gone because moisture leaked into the socket. That’s why we’re seeing a big move toward high-waterproof infrared heaters built right into the ceiling or the mirror. It just makes more sense. The difference in how you actually feel the heat Most heaters try to warm up the air. But in a bathroom? That warm air just disappears through the vent or under the door. You’re basically heating the hallway. Infrared is different. It doesn’t care about the air. It sends warmth directly to your skin and the glass of your mirror. It’s instant. You don’t have to stand around shivering while the room slowly warms up. Plus, since it keeps the mirror surface warm, you can actually see yourself after a shower instead of wiping away a thick layer of fog with a towel. Dealing with the steam (and the safety stuff) Water and electricity don’t mix. It’s the number one reason bathroom fixtures die early. To stop this, these newer units use IP-rated seals—usually IP44 or higher. Think of it as a tight raincoat for your heater. We use special gaskets and sealed quartz tubes so the steam can’t get inside and fry the electronics. If you go cheap on the waterproofing, the wiring will probably corrode before the first winter is even over. Not a great look. Fitting it all in If you’re putting this in a mirror, you don’t want a bulky hunk of metal ruining the vibe. We use slim, low-profile arrays that stay hidden. One thing to keep in mind: more power means the mirror clears faster, but it also puts more stress on your electrical panel. You’ll want to make sure your wiring can handle the load so you aren’t tripping the breaker every time you turn the heat on in January. It’s a simple swap from those old lamps, but you get way more heat and a product that actually lasts.
