
Why Your Infrared Heaters Actually Die (And How to Fix It)
Here is a little secret about workshop ceiling heaters: it’s rarely the heating element that gives up the ghost. Most of the time, the real culprit is the lead-wire seal. Think of it as a thermal bottleneck. When you crank the heat up, that tiny spot where the electrical wire enters the quartz tube takes a beating. If that seal isn’t perfect, oxygen sneaks in. Once that happens, the tungsten starts to oxidize, the insulation falls apart, and your heater is on a fast track to the scrap heap. The problem with “cheap” If you buy a budget heater, you’re usually getting basic adhesive or some low-grade silicone plugging that gap. It works for a while. But after a few hundred heat cycles, those materials shrink. They crack. Then the real trouble starts. Moisture and dust crawl into the connection point, creating a path for electricity to go where it shouldn’t. You’ll hear the arcing, the insulation will fail, and then—pop—you’ve got a dead short. We do things differently. We use OEM-grade sealing—think high-temp ceramic-to-metal seals or vacuum-grade glass fusing. It basically locks the atmosphere out. Even when the tube is glowing white-hot, those wires stay isolated and safe. The balancing act It’s actually a bit of a physics puzzle. Quartz tubes and copper leads don’t expand at the same rate when they get hot. If a seal is too rigid, the glass just snaps. Too soft? It leaks. We’ve spent a lot of time dialing in a seal that flexes just enough to handle the heat but keeps a tight, vacuum-like grip. It stops that “creep” that usually leaves wires exposed and leads to short circuits. The one catch Now, there is a trade-off. Better sealing costs a bit more upfront.
